Abstract:

The aim of this publication is to give a overview of monitoring in bovine in Kosovo about anabolic steroids substances-Group A3 residues. The study was conducted in support of Directive No.96/23/EC as well as in compliance with the Instruction No.07/2016 “concerning the prohibition of substances like oestrogenic, androgenic or gestagenic” which have hormonal action, when they are used in stock farming. The potential presence of unauthorized substances in bovine meat, may be a risk factor for public health. The survey was carried out in two phases. The first phase was realised over the years 2007-2010 and during this period were tested 187 samples, while in the second phase (was realised over the years  2013-2017) were tested 62 samples. The analytic tests were carried out for all the anabolic steroid substances with the focus on Trenbolone, Testosterone and Boldenone which are synthetic and natural substances. The samples were collected in slaughterhouses and farms which were located in 7 regions of Kosovo. Target matrices were meat and urine from bovine with domestic origin. Most of the  samples were performed at Food and Veterinary Institute in Skopje, while few of them were tested in Food and Veterinary Laboratory in Pristina. Samples were tested with ELISA, which is considered as a screening method. The method is based on the competitive reactions between the conjugate and analyte (peroxidasis), which are contained in 96 strips. Out of 249 tested samples, 6 (2.41%) of them were reported as non-compliant for further testing because resulted as suspicious samples.
