Abstract:

Synej district is located in the centre of Albania on Kavaja Municipality which is typically agriculture area. Analysis of land fragmentation phenomenal and dynamics of its transformation, affect in terms of sustainable management of land resources. Our main objective of this study was the identification of land fragmentation and changes that have happened during last 25 years through the use of Geographic Information System (GIS). This work does not only provides a spatial database at the municipal level, but also collects data on land use, analyzes changes in land use destination and urbanization of agriculture land. For this purpose a database for land management in the Synej district was established. Through this study are identified changes in land surfaces used by agriculture and other categories of land resources. Land use changes are analysed based on information of land use before and after the year 1991. Major changes have occurred in agricultural land. In this class, transformations from agricultural to non-agricultural classes have been identified. Results show that the surface of agricultural land is reduced by 260 hectares or about 7% of agricultural land fund, which is destined to become largely non-agricultural land with 140 hectares or 3%. The study concludes with data on land use, land use maps for 1991 and 2009 and the map of land use changes. The results of this study suggest a rapid intervention to protect agricultural land from uncontrolled urban development.
